David Rosenberg, lawyer and developer

David Rosenberg, 63, formerly of Mt. Airy, a lawyer and a real estate developer in Northwest Philadelphia, died Dec. 3 of complications of Crohn’s disease at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Fla., where he and his wife, Lucia, had been living for the past three years.

For the past three decades, Mr. Rosenberg had been a real estate developer, restoring properties in Mt. Airy, Germantown and East Falls that he felt were architecturally significant

Earlier he had worked with the law firm of Marsh & Horowitz in Media, and in marketing and sales at Ogden Foods.

Born in Abington, Mr. Rosenberg graduated from the Hun School at Princeton and what is now St. Joseph’s University. He received his law degree from Temple University Law School.

He was a jazz fan, a student of World War II history and an avid collector of art and photography.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Evelyn; brothers Andrew, of Miami, and Stuart, of Elkins Park, and a sister, Elaine. Memorial donations may be sent to the Cleff Foundation, 738 S. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19146, or to any Crohn’s disease organization. – WF


Mary Jane Howe Flaith

Mary Jane Howe Flaith, age 95, died peacefully December 8 at home in Wyndmoor, PA. Beloved wife of the late G. Donald Flaith of Germantown, PA. Born 1918 in Tarentum, PA, the eldest child of Charles P. Howe and Mildred (Powell). She was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan and received a Master’s from Teachers College, Columbia Univ. During WWII, she joined the Red Cross, aiding G.I.’s at home and abroad. She worked at College Settlement, later teaching at Friends Select. She championed social and environmental causes, and was a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She was known for her enthusiasm, curiosity, love of music and nature, and was especially fond of family and friends’ get-togethers at Charleston Lake, Ont. She is survived by two daughters, Rachel (Ralph Reed, artist) and Karen, her grandson, Jackson Reed, her sister, Elisabeth Simon, brother-in-law John Lineweaver, and many nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by her husband, Don, her brother, David, her sister, Sally Lineweaver, and brother-in-law Gene Simon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Jared W(istar). Sparks, 70, arborist and landscaper, of Erdenheim, died of a heart attack November 28. He was a graduate of William Penn Charter School and attended the University of Pennsylvania. Son of the late Hannah and George C. Sparks of Philadelphia and Bremen, Maine. Survived by sisters Susan Mcfarland of Pensacola, Florida, and Deborah Sparks of East Sound, Washington state, and nieces Amanda and Annie Sparks-Dempster, and Jennifer Postlewaite, and nephews Christopher and Nathan Mcfarland. Predeceasing Jared was his former wife, the late Martha Pilling of Chestnut Hill. Jared worked locally in the Chestnut Hill, PA, area, at Oxford, Maryland, and the Virgin Islands. Previously he was a Volkswagen mechanic at West German Motors, worked for his father’s company, the Sparks Corporation, transacting business in German in Germany, and was a journalist for several Philadelphia suburban newspapers, including the Chestnut Hill Local. Jared had many interests and significant knowledge in botany, astronomy, sailing, kayaking (certified instructor, Philadelphia Canoe Club), ornithology, languages (speaker of French, German, Spanish), literature, music (singer with Choral Society of Montgomery County, performing with them at the National Cathedral), the seafood industry, journalism, information technology, fishing (freshwater), and coastal life of the Northeast and central Atlantic states. He played on an ice hockey team at the Wissahickon Skating Club. Enhancing his bona fides as a Renaissance man were his generosity, kindness, and a sophisticated sense of humor, that he brought to bear with charm and sincerity. He was a congregant of the Upper Dublin Monthly Meeting. Jared’s natural history collection will be donated to the library of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge near Cambridge, Maryland. Michael Shea, 56, of Hope, Indiana, formerly of Chestnut Hill, died at home surrounded by family on November 8, 2013 after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Joanne, and sons Michael and Brian. Julia M. Clay, teacher

Julia Myers Clay 87, formerly of Wyndmoor, a retired elementary school teacher, died Nov. 62 at Foulkeways, a retirement community in Gwynedd.

Mrs. Clay had taught kindergarten and second grade at Chestnut Hill Academy for 12 years before retiring in 1975. In retirement she had worked at the Leather Bucket, an antiques shop in Chestnut Hill where she could combine her skills as a decorator with her love of antiques.

Born in Wyndmoor, she was a graduate of Springfield High School and Randolph Macon Women’s College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and played field hockey, basketball and volleyball for all four years, earning a position on the Virginia State Field Hockey Team.

Mrs. Clay was an accomplished cook, hosting large family gatherings for the holidays, an avid gardener and a skilled needleworker, completing many sewing, needlepoint and knitting projects over her lifetime.

She had a special affection for the coast of Maine, to which she was introduced at an early age, and enjoyed spending summers in Winter Harbor with her husband, the late Edward B. Clay Jr. She was a longtime member of the Winter Harbor Yacht Club, Sunnybrook Golf Club, the Random Garden Club and the Acorn Club of Philadelphia.

She is survived by sons Edward, of Bryn Mawr, Philip, of New Canaan, Conn., and Peter, of Wentham, Mass.; a daughter, Julie Pearson, of Winter Harbor, Maine; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held Dec. 21 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chestnut Hill. Memorial donations may be made to St. Christopher’s Church, c/o M. Bennett, Treasurer, P.O. Rev. Walter O. Reimet, pastor

The Rev. Walter O. Reimet, a member of the Foundation Board at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and an LTSP alumnus, died Dec. 22 at Seasons Hospice of Phoenixville.

Mr. Reimet also was a member of the Mt. Airy seminary’s Alumni Council for many years and frequently attended seminary events.

In retirement, he lived at Shannondale, a retirement community in Audubon, and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Phoenixville.

A Philadelphia native, he was a graduate of Central High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Muhlenberg College before attending the seminary. He served for three decades as pastor of Temple Lutheran Church in Havertown.

Mr. Reimet is survived by daughters Pamela Reimet McGuire, of Foxborough, Mass., Karen Reimet, of King of Prussia, and Elizabeth Reimet, of Fort Washington; a brother, Richard, and six grandchildren. Mr. Reimet’s wife, the former Virginia Hines, died in 2009.

A memorial service was held Jan. 4 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 355 St. John’s Circle, Phoenixville, PA 19460. Memorial donations may be made to the above church for the MaaSae Girls’ Lutheran Secondary School Fund. – WF

Survived by her seven children, Jeannie, Fay, Mark, Eric, Nancy, Scott and Pamela, 20 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. William J. Maher, hotel manager

William J. Maher, 86, of Chestnut Hill, a longtime manager of hotels and country clubs, died Jan. 8 at the Edge Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Glenside.

Until his retirement in 1994, Mr. Maher had held a variety of positions in the hotel/restaurant business, including training director for the Sheraton Hotels Corporation. He managed several hotel properties and country clubs around the country and, later in his career, was an executive recruiter for the hospitality industry.

Raised in Chestnut Hill, he was a graduate of Our Mother of Consolation Parish School, LaSalle High School and Villanova University. He was a member of the swimming team at LaSalle and the 150-pound football team at Villanova.

He served in the Army in Germany and Austria after World War II and was a member of the Ocean City Beach Patrol from 1944 to 1951.

Physically active throughout his life, he was an avid runner, competing in local road races, including the Broad Street Run and the Prevention Marathon. He also enjoyed swimming, playing golf and, later in life, walking.

He was fond of gardening and travel, having visited Ireland several times.

Mr. Maher was a lifelong member of Our Mother of Consolation Parish and an active member of the Villanova University Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ellen O’Neil; sons Andrew P., William J. Jr. and Joseph A.; a daughter, Ellen A.; a sister, Mary Schlussel, of Horsham; a brother, Joseph A. Maher, of Port Orange, Fla., and 10 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 14 at Our Mother of Consolation Church, 9 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19118. Memorial donations may be made to the above church. – WF

J. Wayne Lee, property manager

J. Wayne Lee, 81, a commercial property manager, died Jan. 9 of the complications of a stroke at the Hill at Whitemarsh, where he lived in retirement after residing for more than 40 years in Chestnut Hill.

When he retired in 1997, Mr. Lee was vice president of the Jacksom-Cross Co., managing several Center City office buildings. Earlier he had managed diverse properties for Cynwyd Investments in Bala Cynwyd and was a real estate representative for Acme Markets.

He also served on the executive committee and as president of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Building Owners and Managers Association.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Lee was the son of P. Blair Lee, a distinguished Philadelphia banker and civic leader, and the great, great, great grandson of Richard Henry Lee, signer of the Declaration of Independence on behalf of Virginia and president of the Continental Congress.

He attended Chestnut Hill Academy, the Pomfert School and graduated from the Wharton School of Business. He served as a captain in the Army transportation corps, then studied agriculture at the University of Maryland’s Graduate School while working for his uncle Col. E. Brook Lee, who owned and operated a large cattle and real estate operation.

He was an avid ice hockey player and a member of Wissahickon Skating Club, serving on its board more than four decades and as club president. During his tenure at WSC, he oversaw several significant improvements to the skating programs and facility. He also served as a valuable member of many committees at the Hill at Whitemarsh.

He is survived by his wife, Anne; a daughter, Anne Lee Lohr, of Wallingford; sons J. Wayne Lee Jr., of Philadelphia, and Henry R. Lee, of White House Station, N.J.; sisters Anne Lee Reath, of Irvington, Va., and Laura Bullitt, of Bryn Mawr, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday Jan. 17, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 22 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., in Chestnut Hill, followed by a reception at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill. Memorial donations be made in his name to the Friends of Acadia, P.O. Deborah Latta, age 101, on January 14, 2014. Formerly of Chestnut Hill, she has most recently been a resident of Cathedral Village. She was the wife of the late Cuthbert H. Latta, Jr. and the mother of the late John Latta, II and the late Mary Latta Gooding. Mrs. Latta is survived by her daughter, Hope L. Bennett of Ambler, 4 grandchildren, Deborah Bradley Clements of Bethesda, MD, Gail C. Redpath of Wyndmoor, PA, Leslie C. Haddow of Erdenheim, PA and J. Hunter Bennett of Washington, DC and 12 great grandchildren. A longtime resident of Society Hill, Mrs. Latta was active on the Board of the Hill-Physick-Keith House and the Modern Club serving as Secretary for many years. Stanley S. Frazee Jr., lawyer

Stanley S. “Stan” Frazee Jr., 82, of Wyndmoor, a retired lawyer for Conrail, died Jan. 13 of cancer at Keystone Hospice in Wyndmoor.

Until his retirement in the 1990s, Mr. Frazee had been associate general counsel for Consolidated Rail Corp. (Conrail) and its predecessors, the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. and Penn Central Transportation Co.

After retiring from Conrail, he was associated at different times with the Philadelphia law firms of Gallagher, Reilly & Lachat and Hohn & Scheuerle.

He was a member of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel and was past vice president of the Eastern Region. He also was a past chairman of the Railroad Industry Committee on Asbestos and Hearing Loss Litigation.

Born in East Orange, N.J., he was raised in Mt. Airy and graduated from the William Penn Charter School, Princeton University and the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Law.

Mr. Frazee was an avid sports fan and loved to travel, having visited England and Ireland with his late wife, Eleanor.

Mr. Frazee is survived by sons Stanley S. III and Jonathan W.; a daughter, Elizabeth G., and six grandchildren.

Donald O. Baumann

Donald O. Baumann, age 78 on Jan. 12, 2014 of Malvern and a long time resident of Wayne. Son of the late Mae Emma (nee Capuret) and Otto Faustin Baumann, Don was born in Abington Twp. Montgomery County and grew up in Meadowbrook, PA. He graduated from William Penn Charter School class of 1953 and attended University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Don was passionate about early mid Atlantic American furniture and schoolgirl needlework. Many items from his inventory over the years are now in collections of several important museums. In addition to his businesses, Don was an avid Porche enthusiast who both raced and taught high performance driving with the Porche club of America for over 15 years. He also enjoyed vintage racing with the SVRA for many years. He was the co founder of Quaker Pump Company in Lansdale, PA until he sold it and turned to retail antiques sales full time as co owner of Van Tassel-Baumann American Antiques with his wife Ruth. He served in the Army National Guard from Sept. 1957 to June 1963 with Honorable discharge and a rank of SSargent. He was also awarded as a rifle sharpshooter. Don is survived by his wife of 20 years Ruth J. Van Tassel Baumann. Don’s two ex wives who showed particular grace and kindness to Ruth during his illness were Judy Schroeder of Bryn Mawr mother of Hillary Baumann Maclean of Charlotte, NC and Lynne Baumann of Paoli mother of Donald Otto Baumann, Jr., M.D. of Philadelphia and Sarah Elizabeth Baumann of Los Angeles, CA. Don is also survived by his grandchildren Emma Faustin Maclean and Richard Thomas Maclean, Jr., a brother in law Joseph H. Van Tassel III, father of Jesse Van Tassel and Rachel Van Tassel, and sister in law Gretchen Van Tassel Mc Closkey mother of Gwendolyn Mc Closkey both of Glen Mills. Another person very special to Don & Ruth is Heather Lentz, Jesse Van Tassel’s mother also of Glen Mills. Memorial Service will be held on February 16 from 10-10:45 A.M. at the Meeting on the Campus at the William Penn Charter School, 3000 W. Robert F. Blanck, lawyer and trustee

Robert F. Blanck, 87, formerly of Chestnut Hill, a lawyer and a trustee of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia for more than three decades, died Jan. 16 of complications of a stroke at Pottstown Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Blanck was a member of the Philadelphia law firm of Schubert, Gallagher, Tyler & Mulcahey, where he specialized in estates, tax law, real estate and working with nonprofit organizations.

He also served as a trustee of the Mt. Airy seminary from 1970 until his death and was board chairman from 1976 to 2003. As chairman, he served under several presidents and saw many changes to the seminary’s curriculum and campus, including the upgrading of the Hagan Administration Building and the addition of an amphitheatre in the 1970s and, more recently, construction in 1998 of the Wiedemann Center, a new dormitory for housing seminarian families, and construction of the Brossman Learning Center in 2005.

Mr. Blanck also had served as treasurer of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) – a predecessor body of the current Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – from 1982 to 1987 and was a member of the executive board of the Eastern Pennsylvania and later the Southeastern Pennsylvania synods of the church.

He also held numerous congregational leadership positions, particularly at Trinity Lutheran Church in Germantown, where he served as president from 1966 to 1993, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. He also was a lector at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lansdale.

Mr. Blanck and his late wife, Barbara, were longtime residents of Chestnut Hill before moving to Skippack Township.

Born in Philadelphia, he was raised near Reading and graduated from Wilson High School. After a tour of duty in the Air Force, where he served as a radar mechanic and briefly directed a chapel choir at an Air Force base in Shreveport, La., he graduated from Muhlenberg College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.

He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Muhlenberg in 1976 and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by the Lutheran Seminary in 2001.

He was an ardent fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and its Reading Phillies farm team, whose games he frequently attended.

Mr. Blanck is survived by a daughter, Meredith S. Marando-Blanck; three grandchildren, and a great grandson.

Piers Wedgwood, descendant of pottery firm founder

Piers Wedgwood, 59, of Chestnut Hill, a British lord who was the fifth-generation grandson of Josiah Wedgwood, founder of the British pottery company whose products are found on tea tables and in china collections around the world, died Jan. 29 of cardiac failure at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

A businessman, Lord Wedgwood traveled extensively as the international ambassador for Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, his family’s 255-year-old company, and helped to guide the firm through two major reorganizations and the opening of major markets in India, China and Russia.

He also was a working member of the British House of Lords and had served for more than 25 years on the Defense and Heritage Parliamentary Groups before leaving Parliament in 2001.

Lord Wedgwood’s wife, the former Mary Regina Quinn of Philadelphia, is a member of the board of directors of the Chestnut Hill Community Association.

During a career that spanned four decades, Lord Wedgwood was committed to promoting his family’s distinctive blue-and-white pottery, which in public appearances he would use to guide small groups through the traditional British afternoon tea. He entered the family business as a teenager, cleaning pottery kilns and learning production methods at the Wedgwood firm’s headquarters in Barlaston, Staffordshire.

Born Piers Anthony Weymouth Wedgwood on his family’s farm in Nakuru, Kenya, he became the fourth Baron Wedgwood at 16, when his father died in 1970.

He was educated in England at Marlborough College and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He was commissioned in the Royal Scots Regiment in 1973 and deployed to Cyprus. He retired in 1980 with the rank of captain.

Lord Wedgwood received an honorary degree from Staffordshire University for preserving and promoting the North Staffordshire cultural heritage in the art and industry of English pottery.

He was closely identified with Wedgwood collections in British museums and in America, one of which was the Buten Wedgwood Collection, formerly housed in the Buten family mansion in Merion. The collection, valued at $4 million, now is in the Birmingham (Ala.) Museum of Art.

He also donated rare Wedgwood pieces to help raise money for nonprofit groups, such as the Philadelphia branch of the English-speaking Union of the United States. A pet project was the Lord Wedgwood Charity, which raises funds to provide high school sports programs in Birmingham with defibrillators for use in cardiac arrest.

An avid sportsman, he was a member of the Royal Automobile Club of England and the Philadelphia Club.

In addition to his wife, Lord Wedgwood is survived by a daughter, Alexandra Mary Kavanaugh Wedgwood, and two sisters.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

John H. “Jack” Hallock, 93, of Flourtown, PA, passed away on Thursday, January 30th, 2014 with his beloved wife of thirty-three years, Elisabeth “Elsie” Hallock at his bedside. He was the father of Mary S. Hallock, John H. Hallock, Jr. and adopted daughter, Ruth Baron. He was the devoted grandfather of Amelia H. Edwards, Nathaniel G. Edwards, Samuel D. Hallock, M. Peter Hallock, Sarah I. Hallock and uncle to Thomas Hallock, Jr. and Elizabeth Ann Hallock. He was step-father to William B. Patterson, II, Mary B. Heizer, Elisabeth E. Haagen and Sarah R. Benton. Son of Levitt Duane Hallock and Elizabeth Stevens Hallock, Mr. Hallock was born on November, 11th, 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in Cincinnati. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas. Mr. Hallock graduated from Walnut Hills High School, and, after earning his business degree from the University of Cincinnati and completing ROTC training, rose in rank to become a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army where he was stationed in Germany toward the end of WW II. For most of his working career, he was a credit manager for the Philip Carey Manufacturing Company and later, for Panacon, Inc. Toward the end of his career, he was a sales manager for MDC Industries in Philadelphia, PA. Mr. Hallock was an active member of The Mayflower Society, the Sons of the Revolution, and The Society of Colonial Wars. He was a well-loved member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oaks, PA, where he was interred on February, 5th 2014. His charm, warm personality and wit will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Caroline O.(Otjen) Baldi, age 97 of Phila., died Monday (1/28) in the Bishop White Lodge at Cathedral Village, Andorra, Phila. She was a retired Librarian for Germantown Academy in Ft.Washington. Mrs. Baldi was born in Enid, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late William J. and the late June (Cullison ) Otjen. She was the wife of the late Jospeh F.M. Baldi, II. Mrs. Baldi was a graduate of The University of Colorado and received her Library Science Degree from The University of Oklahoma. She was married in 1946 to her late husband Joseph F.M. Baldi, II and moved to Phila. Mrs. Baldi was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill and the Union League of Phila. She is survived by two sons: Joseph W. Baldi (Francina) of Frederick, MD. Robert O. Baldi (Cheryl) of Doylestown, PA. 6 Grandchildren ,5 Great Grandchildren. Her Funeral Services and burial will be held privately. Mari D. (Healey) Seib, 54, of Daisy Lane, Lehighton, Towamensing Twp., died suddenly, early Monday morning, Jan. 27, 2014, in her home. She was the wife of the late Brian C. Seib who passed last July. Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late James and Shirley (Davey) Healey. Mari worked as manager of McDonald’s of Allentown. Previously, she worked in same capacity for the Summerwood Corp-Taco Bell, Çonshohocken, for several yrs. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Palmerton. Mari was an active member of the Carbon County Democratic Party. Survivors: daughter, Jennifer A. wife of John Kulak of Lehighton, son, Joshua A. Seib and wife Corrine Holcomb of Cherry Hill, NJ. 2 grandchildren, Autumn and John. Brothers, Paul and wife Evelyn of Dayton, OH, Gerard and wife Rebecca of Springfield. Nieces and nephews.
